Portugal has a high risk of female circumcision
The World Health Organisation has classified Portugal as ‘high risk’ for practice of female genital mutilation due to the large number of immigrants from countries like Guinea-Bissau where the custom is widespread, an expert said this week.

Sierra Leone is a signatory to numerous international treaties and conventions condemning physical torture, discrimination and harmful traditional practices. But our laws are silent on this FGM thing. Journalists forced to strip after being attacked by women's group
Four female journalists were attacked by a pro-female genital mutilation (FGM) group on Monday and forced to stip naked and walk through the centre of Kenema, a town in the eastern part of the country. The four women were accused of reporting on an anti-FGM campaign last Friday, which marked the international day of tolerance for zero circumcision.

Female Circumcision in Somaliland
Female genital mutilation, or FGM, is a traditional practice that is performed throughout the Horn of Africa and other parts of the continent. The procedure is often called female circumcision, and it is illegal but still common in the self-declared republic of Somaliland, where health care workers, activists and others are working to end it. In other developments, Ten U.N. agencies have launched a campaign to significantly reduce female circumcision by 2015 and eradicate the damaging practice within a generation.
In a statement released Wednesday, the agencies said female circumcision violates the rights of women and girls to health, protection and even life since the procedure sometimes results in death.
The agencies pledged to support all efforts by governments, communities, women and girls to reduce and end the practice. Read more here.

Unicef calls on Egypt to ban Female Circumcision
The UN children's fund on Monday called for pressure to be maintained to stop female circumcision in Egypt, where more than three quarters of 15 to 17 year-old girls are subjected to the practice.
"Egypt is one of the few countries in the Middle East where excision is a problem, with a level of 77 percent of young girls between 15 and 17 years and around 60 percent among girls under the age of three," said Ernon Manoncourt, UNICEF's representative in Egypt, quoting 2005 data.

Girl tested for circumcision 'because she was Somalian'
A girl was forced by Swedish social workers to undergo a gynaecological examination simply because her parents were Somalian, Sweden's Discrimination Ombudsman has ruled.
The social workers forced the girl, 11, to submit to the examination to see whether she had been subjected to genital mutilation (circumcision). The girl was collected by police from school shortly after returning from a visit to relatives in Kenya.

What is Female Circumcision ?
Female Circumcision is the removal of parts or whole organs of the female genitalia; i.e. clitoris, labiae minora and majora.
